Dealing with an Alcoholic Family Member

Having an alcohol dependent person in the family can be difficult. It is unfortunate to be a spectator of how your loved one changes from an ordinary individual to an alcoholic, and from your family to a seemingly total stranger. You also get to witness how his life gradually changes and how his initially social drinking habit turned to addiction that is now affecting your whole family.

As much as it is hard to be associated to a person who is dependent on alcohol, you should also know that you, as his family are his number one chance of survival from completely losing himself over alcoholism. But before forcing him to enter rehabilitation, it is important that you make him understand that he needs the program. Most alcoholism doesn’t just start from curiosity to drink alcohol. Some of them may be because of a burden. Determine the cause of the problem first. This will help you understand the alcoholic. Do not look at the patient as if he hasn’t change at all this will also put you in denial of the situation just like the patient tends to be. Accept that he did change and that he is not the same person years ago.

One of the best things you can also do for him is to show your support in his journey to rid himself of alcohol dependency as a family’s love and support is a great motivation in wanting to get cured.
