Struggles of the Hearing Impaired

Hearing impairment poses some negative effects to the quality of life in many individuals who have this disability. One of the most common struggles of a hearing impaired person is having a communication barrier between him and other people, especially with those who he cares deeply for. Another common experience is encountering some discrimination. Although most people who are hearing impaired are physically and mentally capable of performing tasks and responsibilities people with normal hearing can, individuals who are auditory challenged are often treated as if they are ignorant, stupid and not capable of making important decisions. Many have sought medications for the health conditions that may cause the loss in hearing, yet unfortunately, a big percentage of the hearing impaired population can just turn to using devices that can help amplify sounds such as digital hearing aids.

With the presence of factors such as gender, age, civil status and whether the loss in hearing started early in childhood or has a later onset, the quality of life of those challenged by difficulty of hearing varies in case to case basis. Individuals who have lost their hearing during childhood tend to show difficulties in expressing their thoughts even when they are communicating with the use of sign language and the help of hearing aid devices. People who have lost their hearing on a later point in their lives show emotional and coping struggles.

Hearing impaired women were more susceptible to social discriminations and even cases of sexual assault than men who have lost the ability to hear. What is more unfortunate is that they obtain these ill treatments from someone they personally know and trust.
